County Council bad weather update

Gritting teams and contractors have continued working through the day on opening all the primary gritting routes, making them safe for road users.

All major A roads are now open as are most B roads; the exception being the B6341 Hepple to Elsdon Road which is likely to remain closed for the next two days.

NCC teams are continuing to work, utilising all the gritters / ploughs, tractors, agricultural and other contractor resources to deal with routes that remain impassable. They will continue to work to open more rural sections of our network.

Town centre footpaths have continued to be cleared through the day and this has been widened to some other main footpaths and routes to schools.

The public are still being advised the drive carefully and with care, and if urgent assistance is required, to call 0345 600 6400.

Bin collections

Plans are being finalised. However, in terms of this week, the proposal is through Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th March NCC will be aiming to complete general refuse collections and scheduled recycling collections in all areas, where it is safe to do so. However there will be areas, including some rural locations, where they may not be able to safely collect from.

If general waste or recycling collections are missed on either of those days, residents are being advised to leave bins out. Weather permitting, NCC teams aim to have completed all this week’s collections by the end of the week.

On general waste, NCC advise residents that they will be accepting two additional black bin bags (or something of a similar size) alongside their regular general waste bin.

On recycling, particularly for those that aren’t scheduled for another two weeks, NCC have advised the overflow can be put in cardboard boxes, paper bags, or clear plastic bags. NCC will be distributing quantities of clear bags at their customer information centres. Other locations are being explored eg libraries, and we’ll be able to confirm those on Monday. These supplies will be distributed on Monday.

The majority of Household Waste Recovery Centres were open on Sunday at 8am with the exception of Allendale and North Sunderland.

In terms of schools, NCC teams have worked to clear access roads where it has been safe to do so. In terms of closures, as you know, schools are responsible for notifying parents of any closures due to weather.  Residents are being advised to check with their school directly for the most up-to-date information. As schools announce a closure to us, they will appear on our alerts page at:
