Get ready for Alnwick’s big switch-on!

Wrap up in your favourite winter woollies and head down to the Market Place on November 18th for Alnwick’s big switch-on!

The fantastic Christmas Lights volunteers have been busy since May preparing the displays to ensure the town is sparkling over the festive season and all their hard work will be evident at 7pm when the Duchess of Northumberland, aided by a local child, will flick a switch to light up the town.

Since early October, most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays the team  of 18 have been working in all weathers to erect the lights. The need for energy conservation means that the team now relies on LED lighting and this year the timers will be modified to reduce the hours they are on.

As usual the switch-on will be preceded by entertainment and amusements and Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band will entertain the crowd by playing festive music on the stage. The Lights volunteers will hang decorations from local schoolchildren on the Christmas tree.

Alnwick Christmas Lights Chairman Gordon Castle expressed his appreciation on behalf of the team for the major donations provided for equipment and unit rental costs by Alnwick Town Council, Alnwick Lions, Alnwick Round Table and Mr Meenu Malhotra of the Malhotra Group.

He said “The team are especially grateful to Warren Access of Gateshead who provide the essential hoists every weekend without charge and to Dean of Melvyn’s cafe who provides the traditional meeting place with refreshments at no cost to the team. Added to this are other donations from many individuals and businesses to meet the annual budget now £18K.”

“There is always a great atmosphere in the Market Place as people gather to watch the switch-on of the best display of Christmas Lights in the region, I look forward to seeing everyone for some festive fun.”
