Hundreds of people joined a procession through Alnwick today and witnessed the raising of the Ukrainian flag at the Column Field.

Many people chose to wear blue and yellow clothes, ribbons or carried a Ukrainian flag as they gathered in Alnwick Market Place before being led by the Duke’s Piper Andrew Davison through the Bondgate Tower to congregate around the War Memorial.

The Duke and Duchess of Northumberland joined the event with the Duke addressing the crowd saying “The people of Alnwick have been incredibly generous to the Ukrainian people in their hour of need. This parade is our way of expressing further solidarity for a people who like us, wish to live their lives in liberty and freedom and not under the yoke of an authoritarian dictatorship.

Alnwick Town Mayor Councillor Lynda Wearn also addressed the gathering adding: “I just want to say how proud I am of the people of this community, from the response there has been with the donations given to help refugees to the turn out today.”
