Traditional Shrove Tuesday fun and games

Alnwick’s historical Shrovetide football game will be held on Tuesday Febraury 17th – and you are invited!

The ball will be thrown off the barbican at Alnwick Castle at 2pm and a piper will then lead a parade down to the North Demense of Alnwick Pastures for the kick-off.

Tha event takes place with the kind permission of  The Duke of Northumberland, who is historically named as the Lord of the Manor.
Teams are made up of residents in the Parishes of St. Michael’s and St. Paul’s and they play on a large and often muddy area of ground overlooking the River Aln and Alnwick Castle.
Playing to win the best of three, the game continues until one team has scored two hales.
Prizes of £15 each will be awarded to the winners of the first and second hales. £30 to the winner of the third and conquering one.
Up to 20 prizes of £5.00 will be awarded in recognition of Good Play.
At the end of the prize-giving the match ball is kicked into the river where players dive in to catch the ball, the person who lands it on the far bank of the River Aln being entitled to keep it.
