Alnwick Cemetery Open Day
An Open Day is being held at Alnwick Cemetery to give people the opportunity to find out about the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and to hear about the lives of the military personnel who are laid to rest there.
The date of Sunday May 28th has been chosen to link in with national War Graves Week.
At 11am a short presentation will be held in the Cemetery Chapel outlining the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the casualties buried in Alnwick. People will then be directed to those graves.
Thirty-six casualties of war of were buried in the town cemetery, including two non-Commonwealth soldiers from Poland.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission state that War Graves Week ‘celebrates the remarkable everyday men and women who faced extraordinary times during the world wars and gave their lives for their communities.’
There will also be the opportunity to purchase a fascinating book which features these local heroes.
‘We remember them still’, written by local historian Patricia Jones with images from Colin Watson, is a tribute to all those who are buried or remembered in the cemetery who lost their lives in the Great War 1914-1918 and the Second World War 1939-1945.
The cemetery grounds can be muddy and slippery in parts. We recommend appropriate footwear. Please get in touch if you would like us to try and organise assistance with mobility, visual or hearing impairment.
Dogs strictly forbidden.
