Alnwick Town Council grant supports Radio Lionheart
Alnwick Town Council has offered ongoing support to Lionheart Radio, the community radio station for Alnwick and the surrounding district, by awarding a £700 grant.
The not-for-profit station, run entirely by dedicated volunteers, reaches around 10,000 potential listeners and broadcasts all day, every day.
The grant is specifically allocated to support the station’s core operational costs, including licences, insurance, and broadband. The funding for broadband is now essential as it enables the station’s global online stream, which benefits local commuters and former residents (“ex-pats”) who wish to stay connected to Alnwick.
Two Alnwick Town Councillors visited the radio station to present the grant.
Councillor Rosie Bush said “We recognise that Lionheart Radio is a focal point for volunteers, a provider of training, and an information hub for community organisations, charities and young people and are therefore pleased to offer them funding.” Colleague Councillor Karen Hedley added “I listen to Lionheart radio before I go out to work for a night shift, and when I come back in the morning. I appreciate their company!”
Lionheart Radio services include local news broadcast five days a week and a community hour three times a week that focuses on the activities of local organisations.
Youth involvement is important to the station – they have successful partnerships with the 2nd Alnwick Girl Guides and Barndale House School, allowing young people to host their own popular shows.
The station involves a core team supporting 35-40 adult volunteers (aged 18 to 70+) and approximately 10 young presenters. Beyond providing entertainment and information, the station offers local residents of any age the opportunity to gain valuable media and presenter training, boosting their confidence and skills while significantly contributing to Alnwick’s identity and sense of communal well-being.
