Council shows commitment to equality and inclusion
On behalf of Alnwick Town Council, Councillor Rosie Bush has signed the ‘Newcastle-Gateshead Declaration’, the world’s first global statement of LGBTQ+ solidarity.
Rosie commented: “I’m proud to be a member of a Council that stands together with the LGBTQI+ community in showing a shared commitment to equality and inclusion. I like that Alnwick is the fourth civic name on the list!”
The official signing ceremony took place at The Assembly Rooms in Newcastle, attended by His Excellency Jeroen Cooreman, Belgian Ambassador to the UK, alongside Cllr Karen Kilgour (Leader of Newcastle City Council), Cllr Gary Haley (Deputy Leader of Gateshead Council), and invited guests.
The signing came at the end of a summit that welcomed over 600 delegates from 40 countries over a week, who came together to share strategies, build networks, and advance LGBTQI+ rights worldwide.
With input from activists, policymakers, grassroots organisers and civil society leaders, the Declaration marks a major milestone in the global movement for LGBTQI+ equality.
