Festive duties keep the Mayor busy

The run up to Christmas is always a busy time for Alnwick Town Mayor with a variety of events filling the diary but there were no complaints from our current Mayor, Councillor Geoff Watson, as he loves to embrace the festive season.

At the recent meeting of the Full Council, he relayed his recent activities to his fellow councillors.

Having hosted his own carol service in November, Geoff and Councillor Gordon Castle attended the outdoor carol service in the Market Place and enthusiastically joined in the singing.

There was more carol singing when he accepted an invitation from Reverend Mitch to attend the St Michael’s Church Carol Service where the congregation, which included the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, filled the church.

Still with a Christmas theme, the Mayor attended the Alnwick Lions raffle draw at the Playhouse. The raffle was held to raise money for Alnwick Christmas Lights.

Together with other Councillors, Councillor Watson attended The Fleece Christmas Lunch which provided a free meal to people who were on their own over Christmas. Councillors helped serve the meal and clear up afterwards. Geoff praised The Fleece for their Christmas community spirit which benefitted all those who attended the lunch.

The Mayor attended the GCSE coursework exhibition at the Duchess’s Community High School. Once again, he was very impressed with the standard of the work produced by the students, recognising the talents of the students.

Together with Councillors Gordon Castle and Martin Swinbank, Mayor Watson attended the launch of the Alnwick Baby Basics charity at St James Hall. The charity volunteers put together essential baby items for new mothers including a new crib. The event was also attended by the Duchess of Northumberland. This is an excellent new community group providing an important service to the residents of Alnwick.

The Mayor accepted an invitation to officially open House of Hair Alnwick, in their new town centre location.  A hairdressers’ isn’t the type of venue Geoff often frequents but he was very impressed with the stylish interior and wished Rached and her team all the best in their new location.
