Luxury living for Alnwick’s hedgehogs!
With funding from Alnwick Town Council and help from students from the Duchess’s Community High School, hedgehogs in Thomas Percy Wood are going to have some top-notch accommodation.
Mayor, Councillor Geoff Watson explains: “Alnwick Town Council is planning a number of initiatives at Thomas Percy Wood designed to improve accessibility, biodiversity and wildlife at the site.”
“We want to increase the bird, bat and bug population and I’m delighted to say DCHS students are now helping us to look after the hedgehog community too. The council provided 20 hedgehog house kits, and a girls’ technology group at DCHS are currently constructing them.”
Technology teacher Lucy Raine said “We are keen to encourage technology and engineering with our students and it’s great to see this group embracing the hedgehog house woodworking project. It’s great fun and of course we all love hedgehogs too!”
Jen Stephenson from the Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue Trust met the students to explain how the boxes would benefit the hedgehogs.
Councillor Watson concluded “We are hoping to create a wildlife haven at the wood. Local brownies have already made bug hotels for the site and for now the focus is on the local hedgehog community. The DCHS students have been a pleasure to work with, and I think the hedgehogs will appreciate what they have done too!”
