Town Council approves grants for local organisations

At its December 2015 Finance & Policy meeting Alnwick Town Council approved nearly £11,000 of grants to local charities, societies and associations for 2016.

This included four grants of over £1,000 to Alnwick and District Playhouse Trust, Bailiffgate Museum, Hospice Care North Northumberland and Alnwick Citizens Advice Bureau as well as grants to five organisations who had applied for grants for the first time.

Mayor of Alnwick, Bill Grisdale, said “I feel it’s really important that as a council we support our local organisations. They do an invaluable job for the town both in supporting local people and also promoting the town to a wider audience, which is always a good thing”.

The Town Council received 20 applications for grants, including five new applicants for 2016 grants – Alnwick Cricket Club, Alnwick Rugby Club, League of Friends of the Alnwick Hospital, Lionhearts Service User Group (Alnwick) and  Northumberland Credit Union. Earlier in the financial year a grant was also awarded to Gallery Youth project.

The grants are used to help with a range of items such as essential running costs including insurance and electricity, training volunteers, help towards purchasing much needed items such as a treatment table, sports equipment and parts for essential machinery. This year sees some new type of support being helped through a grant including funding towards digital reminiscence software used by dementia patients.

In addition to these grants the Town Council also gives grants to event organisations in the town.  The latest grants of just over £11,300 included awards to Alnwick in Bloom, Alnwick Spring Show, Alnwick Christmas Lights, Local Living and Alnwick International Music Festival.

Applications for grants are welcomed and the relevant guidance and application form can be found under the Services heading on our Home Page.
