As well as helping to maintain this important community asset you can also be involved in new developments in the cemetery including preparing the new burial area to the west of the existing cemetery and the natural burial area at the top of the main avenue. In addition to keeping the cemetery tidy, the Town Council undertake annual planting of trees, shrubs and bulbs as well as activities that will make the cemetery a more wildlife-friendly space which this year has included the installation of an owl box..
John Humphries, the recently appointed Chair of the Cemetery Committee commented “the Friends of Alnwick Cemetery programme is important to us. And with the expansion of the cemetery planned for later this year there’s lots more that people can get involved in.
“On the behalf of the Town Council I would like to thank all those who have been Friends of the Cemetery in the past and they’ve made a real difference to the way the cemetery looks”.
Last year Alnwick Cemetery was proud to win a Gold in the Northumbria in Bloom competition and is keen to achieve this again this year.
The Friend of the Cemetery meet monthly, usually for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning, and whilst the weather is suitable to carry out gardening and tidying activities. In the past this has included tree and hedge planting, litter picking, sweeping, weeding and general tidying. All equipment is provided but people should wear sturdy footwear and it sometimes gets muddy.
Anyone who would like to come and help would be very welcome. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer you should phone the Town Council on 01665 602574 or email alnwicktownclerk@btconnect.com to register your interest.
